Kudsi Erguner,         born in Diyarbakir,Turkey in 1952, is a world renowned Turkish musician and a true master  of the ‘ney’, the Turkish reed flute.  He is considered an international authority of traditional Ottoman and Mevlevi Sufi music.  His musical career spans more than four decades where he has realized countless performances and recordings, gaining him critical acclaim while enabling him to bring a universal dimension to traditional Turkish music.Sufi music, with the ‘ney’ as its traditional instrument has survived through the ‘Erguner ecole’ under the stewardship of Ulvi Erguner (Kudsi’s father) and Kudsi is sole artist to be inherit and carry this tradition forward.BiographyKudsi began his musical career at the Istanbul Radio in 1969. As a boy, he and his father often performed hypnotic and spiritual dance rituals from the Mevlevi-sufi tradition at Dervish ceremonies. In 1972, Kudsi Erguner moved to Paris where he continued to practice and develop his music whilest introducing the various aspects of the Ottoman musical heritage as well as different Sufi music as related to classical Ottoman music in various parts of France, the U.K. and the United States. Over this period,  he also earned a PhD degree in Architecure from the D.E.S.A. as well as a PhD degree in Musicology from the Sorbonne. In the early eighties, he founded the “Mevlana” Institute devoted to the study and teaching of classical Sufi music. Together with the “Kudsi Erguner Ensemble” he researched the earliest roots of Ottoman music and developed deep insights into the diversity of his culture: the group conveys both authentic, often improvised forms of expression of classical Ottoman performance culture as well as a comprehensive repertoire of modern and classical pieces that can be traced back to the 13th century.
